33 years of divorce and family law experience, complemented by a Master of Laws in Taxation
Before founding The Law Offices of Michael P. Doman, Ltd. in 1988, Michael P. Doman applied his Master of Laws in Taxation degree working as a tax consultant for an esteemed accounting firm, Ernst & Whinney (which went on to merge and form the global professional services firm Ernst & Young, now known as “EY”).
That tax experience and advanced degree complement Michael’s current practice. A divorce and family law attorney these past 33-plus years, Michael still applies his financial background on an almost daily basis to legal issues that involve the division of marital assets and debt, child support and maintenance.
As Michael explains, “For some people, divorce can be relatively straightforward. But for those who have considerable wealth, such as business owners, professionals and executives with pension plans, restricted stock, nonqualified deferred compensation and the like, having to liquidate all or a portion of an asset carries significant, if not complex, tax implications.
“My tax experience makes it easy for me to anticipate and quantify the financial ramifications of a proposed divestment and suggest constructive alternatives that can help minimize taxes, often to the benefit of both parties.”
A voice for divorce and family law locally
Over the years, Michael has given presentations to area groups and has written columns for the print media, many for suburban newspapers across the Chicago metropolitan area. Topics have included allocation of parental responsibilities and parenting time in Illinois, allocating payment of the minor child’s college education expenses, payment of attorney fees, what happens when a custodial parent needs to move out of state, valuing stock options, grandparent parenting time, the differences between allocation of parental responsibilities, and the distribution of marital assets.
